Vessel
In the
spring of 2002, the Tjaernoe Marine Biological Laboratory and
the Tjaernoe Centre for
Underwater Documentation (CUD) aquired a new boat, the R/V Lophelia,
specially equipped for
mapping and documentation of marine benthic environments. The
boat was financed through a
generous donation from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.
The boat is just under 12 m
long and equipped with two Deutz 340 HP marine diesels and jet
propulsion, giving a cruising
speed of 24 knots. Tailormade installations for operation of
ROV:s and acoustic equipment for
bottom discrimination and underwater positioning provide a highly
efficient new tool for benthic
habitat mapping.
