Survey of deep environments in the Koster Trough - fauna and environmental threts

In 1998, a pilot project on how to use ROV-technology for surveys and documentation of marine areas was started on commission by the Community Administrative Board of Västra Götaland and the National Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The Koster-Väderö trough was chosen as a pilot area, due to known occurrences of marine environments considered to be of special value. The trough is 65 km long and 250 m deep and situated along the northern coast of Bohuslän at the Swedish west coast. The World Wide Fund for Nature had already supported documentation of the same area with ROV-technology since 1995. In the Koster-Väderö trough great biological values and numerous, for Swedish waters, unique species and biotopes have long been known to exist, though the knowledge of the distribution and small scale spatial patterns of these species and biotopes has been rudimentary. In particular, this was the case for the very rich deep hard-substrate habitats. ROV-technology offered completely new opportunities to study these habitats with their associated faunas, and the understanding of them has increased dramatically during the study. ROV-technology also offered new means of informing the general public about biological values and environmental problems in marine environments.
