Our environmental management system is now, February 2004, certified according to the international standard of environmental management, ISO 14001, and registered in accordance with EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme).

That means that Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory, together with The Common Administration, is the first unit to be certified within Göteborg University. In 2005 Göteborg University as a whole aims for the same certificate.

The aim of an environmental management system is to support environmental protection and prevention of pollution in balance with socio-economic needs. Organisations of all kinds are increasingly concerned to achieve and demonstrate sound environmental performance by controlling the impact of their activities, products or services on the environment. Göteborg University was commissioned by the Swedish government in 1998, along with some 40 other authorities to initiate an environmental management system within the organisation.

Though the activities at the laboratory all concerns in one way or another to protect the sea and to learn more about the mechanisms regulating life in sea, our own impact on environment has long been uncertain. By introducing a environmental management system we learn more about the impact om environment that our different activities has on the surroundings.
